A film that illuminates the courage and the strength of people who live with a genetic death sentence: the inheritable and incurable Huntington’s disease.

The genetic death sentence portraits Anja, Jutta, Yves, Marleen en Mario, residents of the only nursing home for patients with Huntington’s disease in Flanders, Belgium. Although they’re all very different, there’s one thing that connects them: their illness. Huntington’s been haunting their family for decades and has thinned them out. It slowly destroys mind and body, with death waiting around the corner. They are all well aware that the decline of their clarity, their intellectual and fysical capacities means an inevitable goodbye to the group and to the last bits of their dignity and their identity. They all handle it in their own way. The film shows how they struggle in their daily life while they’re on an irreversible, strenuous journey through the decay of their body and mind, with only their humour and small fortune to ease the pain. An emotional film about being forced to let go your freedom, personality and abilities, in short everything that makes you who you are.

De ongewenste erfenis portretteert Anja, Jutta, Yves, Marleen en Mario, bewoners en bezoekers van Home Marjorie, het enige nursing tehuis voor Huntingtonpatiënten in Vlaanderen. Hoewel ze onderling erg verschillen is er één ding dat hen bindt: hun ziekte. Huntington waart vaak al decennia lang rond in hun familie en heeft ze sterk uitgedund. Mentale en fysieke aftakeling en de dood hangen als een zwaard van Damocles boven hun hoofd. Allen beseffen ze dat achteruitgang van hun helderheid, intellectuele en fysieke capaciteiten een onvermijdelijk afscheid van de groep betekent en tevens van hun laatste beetje waardigheid en hun identiteit. En daar gaan ze elk op hun eigen manier mee om. De film toont hoe ze zich door hun dagelijks leven worstelen tijdens hun onomkeerbare, slopende reis door het lichamelijke en geestelijke verval, met hun humor en klein geluk als enige medicijn om het leed te verzachten. Een emotionele film over wat het betekent om noodgedwongen afscheid te moeten nemen van je vrijheid, persoonlijkheid en kunnen, kortom alles wat jou tot jou maakt.
